Connecticut town seeks solace in church; Obama due

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Worshippers filled Sunday services to mourn the victims of a gunman's elementary school rampage that killed 20 children and six adults with President Barack Obama due to appear later at an interfaith vigil to help this shattered Connecticut town recover.

Twenty-year-old gunman Adam Lanza shot his way into the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Friday morning, firing away at students and staff with the civilian version of a powerful military rifle and at least two handguns. Victims were hit multiple times and at least one was shot 11 times, authorities said.

All the dead children were either 6 or 7 years old, feeding more emotion into a revived debate about whether stricter gun laws could prevent future mass shootings in the United States.

"If this doesn't shake the consciousness of the country about doing better to protect our children, I don't know what will," said Pedro Segarra, mayor of Hartford, the state capital.

While townspeople grieved, investigators continued to examine forensic evidence and scour the crime scene in a process likely to extend for weeks. Many more witnesses needed to be interviewed, possibly including children who survived the attack, said Lieutenant Paul Vance of the Connecticut state police.

Some of the bodies have been turned over to families, he said.

"We have the best of the best working on this case. ... Our goal is to paint a complete picture so that we all know and the public knows exactly what happened here," Vance said.

Townspeople and visitors took solace in church. Mass at St. Rose Catholic church was packed. The priest's announcements at the end included news that the Christmas pageant rehearsal would go on as planned, but without 6-year-old Olivia Engel, killed on Friday before she could play the role of an angel.

On Saturday, Jews gathered at Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown to express their disbelief at the massacre and show support for the survivors.

About 30 members of the Islamic Association of Connecticut came to St. Rose carrying tulips to lay on the memorials in the church's front yard.

"Everyone here is from all over Connecticut," said Feryal Syed, 14. "I have friends who know some of the families of the kids. We felt if anything happened to our children like this we would feel horrible. We tried to put ourselves in their shoes."

Obama was scheduled to attend an interfaith vigil with the families of the victims starting at 7 p.m. EST.

MEMORIALS DRAW MOURNERS

Makeshift memorials appeared in this affluent town of 27,000 people about 80 miles from New York City.

The largest, festooned with flowers and teddy bears, sat at the end of Dickenson Drive where Sandy Hook Elementary stands. Residents and visitors streamed past a police roadblock to add to it. One woman knelt down and sobbed violently.

As the children walked down the street in the rain, carrying their toys and signs, a man sat on the back on his parked car playing a mournful tune on a violin to accompany them.

"This is a time to come together," said Carina Bandhaver, 43, who lives in nearby Southbury.

The children who survived will not have to return to the scene of the massacre when school reopens later this week and instead will attend classes at an unused school in a neighboring Connecticut town about 7 miles, school officials said. Classes elsewhere in the town would resume on Tuesday, except at Sandy Hook.

GUN DEBATE

Several Democratic lawmakers called for a new push for U.S. gun restrictions on Sunday, including a ban on military-style assault weapons.

Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein of California, the author of an assault-weapons ban that lapsed in 2004, said she would introduce new legislation this week.

"I think we could be at a tipping point ... where we might get something done," New York's Charles Schumer, another top Senate Democrat, said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Gun rights advocates have countered that Connecticut already has among the strictest gun laws in the nation.

Obama's appearance will be watched closely for clues as to what he meant when he called for "meaningful action" to prevent such tragedies.

The president arrives after authorities released the names of the dead on Saturday and more details emerged about the victims and the rampage itself.

After killing his mother, Nancy Lanza, at home, Adam Lanza shot his way into the school and started firing at the children, most if not all with a powerful rifle - a military-style Bushmaster .223 M4 carbine - at close range. He also killed six adult women at the school and himself, putting the death toll at 28.

Lanza had struggled at times to fit into the community and his mother Nancy pulled him out of school for several years to home-school him, said Louise Tambascio, the owner of My Place Restaurant, where his mother was a long-time patron.

His father, Peter Lanza, issued a statement saying the family was in a "state of disbelief."

"We too are asking why," the statement said.

Nancy Lanza legally owned a Sig Sauer and a Glock, both handguns commonly used by police in addition to the long gun, according to law enforcement officials. Police found three guns at the scene and a fourth in an undisclosed location, Vance said.

Though Americans have seen many mass shootings over the years, the victims have rarely been so young. An appalled and grieving nation learned more about the dead.

Emilie Parker, another of the child victims, was studying Portuguese with her father, Robbie Parker, who opened up about his daughter in an emotional news conference in which he turned both glowing and teary.

"This world is a better place because she has been in it," Parker said.

Your table is ready, Mr. HeadsetsDotCom

28 min.

How much is a name worth?

If you're this guy, Jason, it's exactly $45,500.

How does he know?

He sold it for auction (www.buymylastname.com). His last name used to be Sadler but for the next year, it will be HeadsetsDotCom.

It's got a nice beat, you can dance to it, don't you think?

Sadler ? Sorry, HeadsetsDotCom ? is the guy who started a business mid-recession as a professional T-Shirt wearer, where companies pay him to wear a T-shirt with their logo on it, then talk about it on Facebook, Twitter and in YouTube videos. Within just a few years, he's turned his one-man band into mini T-shirt-wearing empire, watching his revenue double in each of the first few years.

After his mom got divorced earlier this year and decided to change her name, he thought maybe he should change his own name and ? ding! ?the light bulb went off and he thought ? why not just auction it off?

It was a bidding frenzy among 25 bidders over the past month or so, including an 11th hour back-and-forth between HeadsetsDotCom and PawnUpDotCom. To the last minute, he had no idea what his last name would be.

"It was definitely exciting and had me on the edge of my seat watching it unfold!" HeadsetsDotCom said.

The capitalists and entrepreneurs among us would high five Sadler, but, um, what does his mom think? His girlfriend?

His mom stayed up late texting him about how nerve-racking the whole thing was.

"My girlfriend thinks I always need to wear headsets now!"HeadsetsDotCom said.

So, how is he going to explain his name at the DMV when he goes to get a license for Jason HeadsetsDotCom (he will) or at the security check at the airport?

"I think the best way to explain it is just going to say it's a Russian name or something!" HeadsetsDotCom said. "Hah, no, I'm proud to have a brand's name as my last name for 2013, and if the timing allows it (not standing in line to board a plane), I'll be happy to tell the story of selling my last name."

Of course, you know he's going to get a thousand "Can you hear me now?" and other jokes from self-amused punsters. What's his comeback?

"I've always been passionate about hands-free phone conversations!" HeadsetsDotCom quipped.

So now, in the harsh light of day, does he ? like a Vegas wedding or face tattoo ? have any regrets?

"No regrets at all. This was a crazy adventure and I look forward to rocking this last name for the next year!" HeadsetsDotCom said.

And for the record, he's not amused with the face-tattoo analogy. It's a year, not a needle to the forehead!

So Jason Sadler, you just changed your name to HeadsetsDotCom, what are you going to do now?

"I'm going to Vegas! Well, not really, but I'll be celebrating at my favorite restaurant in Jacksonville (TacoLu) with my family,"he said.

OK, we got ask ? what will this guy sell next?

" It was my shirt, now my name, I think I'm good on selling things for the time being!" HeadsetsDotCom said.

Boom Ts ? Boom Ts ?Boom Ts ?.cha-ching!

Hey, what's that sound?

Oh, that's just Jason HeadsetsDotCom!

Obama Helps Chinese Investors Purchase US Real Estate to ...

Susanne Posel
Occupy Corporatism
December 11, 2012

?

?

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) is reporting that thanks to foreign investors, the housing market is beginning to make a recovery. These non-American buyers have purchased $82 billion worth of US homes with $7 billion being Chinese and the second largest investors to the Canadians.

Chinese business owners and possibly government representatives are acquiring a large amount of American real estate with $2 billion in commercial properties in 2011.

The NAR also says that Japanese investors are ?buying up America?s landmarks? which has been hailed as an ?economic miracle?. The Japanese are interested in owning ?high-priced hotels, golf courses, office buildings and condominiums.?

Since 1993, the Japanese have been able to assist the American investor in purchasing ?distressed assets? (i.e. foreclosed real estate) by lowering the market values which created astronomically low purchase prices. Now the Chinese from Hong Kong are bringing their money to American shores, buying up properties at an alarming rate.

Canadian investment in US real estate has between 1994 to 1998 to 20.0% along with Germany and the Netherlands.

The NAR praises this boom in foreign investors are a conceptual move from traditional to non-traditional investing. New York is seeing an obvious increase in sales to foreign investors which as contributed to the increasing pace of real estate transactions; while not increasing the value of those properties.

CB Richard Ellis, global real estate advisory firm, asserts that foreign money flooding the US real estate markets means a 1.5% increase to Americans. As property in America is moved into the hands of Asian business-owners and government representatives large portions of New York City, Washington DC, Boston and San Francisco are disappearing from the control of Americans.

In the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas of Florida 10% of client investors are foreign which accounts for 50% of their business transactions. This trend has been going strong since 2010.

This move is touted as an attempt to turn foreign currency from the implosion being committed in the Euro-Zone. And in protecting their ability to use their fiat currency, investing in hard assets (i.e. property, land) is ensuring the wealthy remain so regardless of whether or not fiat currencies are destroyed across the globe.

The Obama administration is pushing for auctions of foreclosed to foreign investors in bulk sales. The foreclosed properties held by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Housing Agency (FHA) are of the utmost importance to unload onto foreign investors. By setting the stage for easy money from foreign investors, Obama ensures that those investments are given a major return as more properties are given up for rent rather than resold.

The largest banks in the US, controlled by the technocrats are staunchly opposed to this move by Obama. They include:

? Wells Fargo
? JPMorgan & Chase Co
? Bank of America
? Citigroup

Janet Seiberg of MF Global claims that these foreign investors are contributing billions of dollars to American housing markets and that this is ?a great idea, and it?s one of the few things that we?ve heard in several years now that could really help housing in a meaningful way.?

Seiberg points out that Resolution Trust Corporation tried to liquidate real properties to stimulate the housing market ? which was a scheme to put money into the pockets of their clients. Other distractions from the actual plot behind this move toward foreign money purchasing American property is purveyed by Morgan Stanley analysts who say that rental-trends have turned ownership of real property into ?lower volatility and outsized returns vs. other major asset classes, even when accounting for the housing bubble and subsequent declines.?

Earlier this year, in cities like St. Paul Minnesota, Mayor John Zanmiller?s backed a law restricting the amount of rental space to no more than 10% in any given neighborhood. Zanmiller said in defense of this city action is his claim that, ? . . . Our concern is that Fannie and Freddie are going to start dumping bundles of properties. [Rental limits] ensure that there are not huge clusters of rentals popping up in one particular block or in one particular area of the city.?

The city officials justify this action as claiming the rental numbers bring the property values down. Opponents say there have not been any studies to prove this fact; that city officials are discriminating against the rental community. A 2003 study conducted by the Journal of Housing Research loosely alluded to a correlation between higher home ownership rates and higher home values, ye there was little to no mention of the causation being renters.

In 2008 our financial and monetary system completely collapsed. Since that time the technocrats have been ?propping up the system? to make it appear as if everything was fine. In reality our stock market and monetary systems are fake; meaning that there is nothing holding them in place except the illusion that they have stabilized since the Stock Market Crash nearly 5 years ago.

Since this time, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in conjunction with FEMA and other federal agencies have been quickly working to set in place their directives of control under a silent martial law.

The cause for the bailout of the banks was a large sum of cash needed quickly to repay China who had purchased large quantities of mortgage-backed securities that went belly-up when the global scam was realized. When China realized that they had been duped into buying worthless securitized loans which would never be repaid, they demanded the actual property instead. The Chinese were prepared to send their ?people? to American shores to seize property as allocated to them through the securitized loan contracts.

To stave this off, the American taxpayers were coerced by former President Bush and former US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson. During that incident, the US Senate was told emphatically that they had to approve a $700 billion bailout or else martial law would be implemented immediately. That money was funneled through the Federal Reserve Bank and wired to China, as well as other countries that were demanding repayment for the fraudulent securitizations.

To further avert financial catastrophe, as well as more debt or property seizure threats by the Chinese, the Euro was imploded there by plunging most of the European countries into an insurmountable free-fall for which they were never intended to recover.

All the money that those banks claimed they needed to avert collapse was also sent to the Chinese to add to the trillions of dollars lost during the burst of the housing bubble on the global market.

Research team recognizes predator-producing bacteria

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Unique viruses called bacteriophages may play an important role in competition among bacterial strains, influencing the overall ecosystem of the human intestine, scientists at The University of Texas at Arlington and UT Southwestern Medical Center say.

A team led by Lora V. Hooper, an associate professor of immunology and microbiology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and including UT Arlington assistant professor of biology Jorge Rodrigues examined the bacteriophages, or phages, produced by genetic information harbored in the chromosome of the mammalian gut bacterium Enterococcus faecalis. They found that a phage unique to Enterococcus faecalis strain V583 in mice acts as a predator, infecting and harming other similar, competing bacterial strains. They believe these lab results suggest what goes on in the human intestine.

"This organism is using phage as a way to compete in your gut. If the phage is released and gets rid of all the other microbes, then strain V583 will have more nutrients available," Rodrigues said. "It opens up new questions about the role of phages in the gut system. Ultimately, you could use this as a technique to control bacteria in a natural way."

The findings were presented in October in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in a paper called, "A composite bacteriophage alters colonization by an intestinal commensal bacterium." It is available online here. Other co-authors were members of Hooper's lab: Breck A. Duerkop, Charmaine V. Clements and Darcy Rollins.

"Now that we've established the role of these bacteriophages, our team is working on trying to discover the specific triggers that lead to phage production in the gut," said Hooper, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. "We also want to understand whether there are other phages that play a role in shaping the composition of gut bacterial communities."

Bacteria are abundant in the human gastrointestinal tract, and scientists are increasingly trying to understand their role in human health. Of those bacteria, Enterococcus faecalis, also known asE. faecalis, can constitute as much as 0.5 to 0.9 percent of gut microflora, according to the researchers. Outside of the gut, E. faecalis can cause dangerous infections, such as endocarditis, and is often resistant to standard antibiotics like vancomycin.

Florida's Crist may run again; GOP says its ready

Charlie Crist has announced on Twitter that he's joining the Democratic Party, Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. (AP Photo/Alan Diaz, File)

(AP) ? Now that former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist is a Democrat, pretty much everyone in Florida's political world expects him to seek his old job.

"I will consider it, and I will think about it," Crist told The Associated Press by phone while boating off of Miami and before a planned dinner Saturday evening with former Democratic governor and Sen. Bob Graham.

The former Republican governor revealed his long-anticipated conversion Friday, after more than two years as an independent. He made the announcement on Twitter and included a photo of his new voter registration form, which he filled out at the White House.

Earlier Saturday, Florida Republicans gathered for a meeting and said they will be extra motivated to re-elect Gov. Rick Scott if his opponent is Crist, who left the GOP during his 2010 run for Senate.

"Bring it on," Peter Feaman, the party's national committeeman, told a room of Republican activists. "That man sat at my house, in my kitchen, at my breakfast table and told me he was a Ronald Reagan Republican. OK, I'm putting my boots on, because guess what? You lied to me."

Should the 56-year-old Crist run, he could become the first person to run for Florida governor as a Republican and as a Democrat. Crist only served one term before choosing to run for Senate instead of re-election.

Republicans, anticipating the switch, have been attacking him for months. As Crist campaigned with President Barack Obama and other Democrats during the fall, Republicans ran a television ad and issued scores of press releases pointing out his previous conservative positions.

"I really feel at home. A lot of it was inspired by what Democrats have stood for, and honestly, friends have told me most of my political life, 'Charlie, you're really a Democrat and you just don't know it," Crist said.

Crist was a moderate governor and met often with Democratic leaders. At dinners in the governor's mansion, he includes both Republicans and Democrats at his head table. He endeared himself to the teachers union by vetoing a Republican priority bill that would have stripped teachers of tenure and based merit raises on test scores. He also won over many black leaders by championing civil rights issues, prompting one black lawmaker to describe him as the first black governor.

Since leaving the GOP, Crist, who called himself "the people's governor" while in office, has criticized the party for going too far to the right. Crist has already criticized Scott for refusing to extend early voting despite pleas from U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and other Democrats.

"The leadership of the party lately has gone off the cliff, I wasn't comfortable enough," Crist said. "What I love most about our state is our people ... I just have a feeling in my heart right now that leadership doesn't appreciate that fact."

Crist was elected governor in 2006 as a Republican, succeeding two-term Republican Gov. Jeb Bush. A popular governor and considered one of the best campaigners in the state, Crist used his charisma and feel-good messages to win over voters.

But many conservatives became disenchanted with Crist after he hugged President Barack Obama at a rally to push for the $787 billion stimulus package, which passed in 2009 with virtually no Republican support.

Although Crist was the early favorite for a U.S. Senate seat in 2010, conservatives began to rally around the bid of Marco Rubio in the 2010 GOP primary, prompting Crist's independent bid.

If he runs for his old job, Crist will have better name recognition than any other Democrat seeking the governor's seat, including former state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, who lost a hard-fought campaign to Scott.

Scott's approval ratings haven't come close to what Crist had in office. Scott, a former hospital chain CEO and tea party favorite who never ran for office before spending nearly $80 million of his and his family's money to win election, isn't considered a natural politician. He can be an awkward speaker, and it has taken a while for him to grow comfortable in the spotlight.

But that doesn't mean Crist would have an easy time winning. During primary elections, only about 20 percent of voters turn out, and they are the most faithful in the party. Activists on both sides will remember the many elections in which they fought Crist, who often called himself a Ronald Reagan and Jeb Bush Republican.

"We're going to be ready to play ball," said Republican Party of Florida Chairman Lenny Curry, noting that Crist previously praised former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, criticized Obama and held conservative views on abortion.

And it's not easy switching parties after reaching political success. After nearly three decades as a Republican U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter switched to the Democratic party rather than face a potentially uphill primary battle against a conservative challenger in 2010. Obama and Senate Democrats welcomed him, but Specter lost in that year's Democratic primary to Rep. Joe Sestak, who went on to lose in the fall to Republican Pat Toomey. Then there's former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer, who won office as a Democrat and then lost his 1992 re-election bid as a Republican.

"The strong Democrats are the ones that vote in the non-presidential year, and they're the ones that are most likely to have a problem with Crist," said Democratic pollster David Beattie.

Beattie, however, said Crist has been smart about the transition because he got people used to the idea of him being a Democrat. After losing his independent bid for Senate, he began doing public events with Democrats. His wife, Carole, switched from Republican to Democrat. Then he began backing Democratic candidates in Florida, then Obama. And he spoke at last summer's Democratic National Convention.

"There are a lot of people who say, 'Oh, I thought he did that a long time ago,'" Beattie said. "I don't think he's stopped campaigning over the last two years."

Tight race in Ghana election as votes are counted

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? Preliminary results from Ghana's presidential poll indicate a tight race between President John Dramani Mahama and opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo.

Results published Sunday by Ghana's electoral body show Akufo-Addo in the lead by about 2 percent, but only 117 out of 275 constituencies had been officially reported by noon on Sunday.

People in Ghana's capital have been glued to their radios since Friday night as local media announce results from polling stations. One private radio station has already predicted a win for Mahama, and people have celebrated in the streets, but official results could be days away.

International observers endorsed Ghana's presidential and parliamentary elections despite delays at polling stations that pushed voting into a second day Saturday.

"All of Africa was looking at Ghana to make sure that they live up to their reputation and their name of being a mature democracy," said Ahmed Issak Hassan, head of an observer mission from the South Africa-based Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa. "I think so far the people of Ghana, the political leadership have lived up to that expectation," said Hassan on Saturday.

"The people of Ghana and the leadership need to be commended," he said in a preliminary assessment of the election. Hassan is also the chairman of Kenya's electoral commission.

On Friday ballot materials arrived hours late to polling stations and many of the biometric voter verification machines broke down, causing long delays.

Electoral chairman Kwadwo Afari-Gyan said no incidents of fraud or violence have been confirmed. Yet rumors of misconduct have been rife.

Police fired water cannons and tear gas on hundreds of opposition party supporters Saturday who were protesting outside a building in northern Accra where they suspected ballots from the presidential and parliamentary election were being counted by a private company.

"They had some young supporters of political parties demanding to know what was going on in a particular house," said Ghana police spokesman Arthur Cephas. "Police came in to restore order. We brought all our management to get youth off the facility, to calm them down."

An AP reporter at the scene heard warning shots fired by police at the crowd.

Cephas said no one was arrested and there were no injuries.

The accusations of improper vote counting were unfounded, said electoral commission spokesman Christian Owusu-Parry. "The electoral commission receives the results directly from the polling stations. The ballot boxes go from the regional offices to the headquarters; there are no intermediaries," said Owusu-Parry.

This nation of 25 million is deeply attached to its tradition of democracy, and voters were urging each other to remain calm while they waited their turn to choose from one of eight presidential contenders.

Ghana was once a troubled nation that suffered five coups and decades of stagnation, before turning a corner in the 1990s. It is now a pacesetter for the continent's efforts to become democratic. No other West African country has had so many elections deemed free and fair, a reputation that voters hold close to their hearts.

The incumbent Mahama, a former vice president, was catapulted into office in July after the unexpected death of President John Atta Mills. Before becoming vice president in 2009, the 54-year-old Mahama served as a minister and a member of parliament. He's also written an acclaimed biography, recalling Ghana's troubled past, called "My First Coup d'Etat."

Akufo-Addo is a former foreign minister and the son of one of Ghana's previous presidents. In 2008, Akufo-Addo lost the last presidential election to Mills by less than 1 percent during a runoff vote. Both candidates are trying to make the case that they will use the nation's oil riches to help the poor.

Besides being one of the few established democracies in the region, Ghana also has the fastest-growing economy. Oil was discovered in 2007 and the country began producing it in December 2010. But a deep divide still exists between those benefiting from the country's oil, cocoa and mineral wealth and those left behind financially.

(AP) ? Billionaire media baron Silvio Berlusconi, who resigned in disgrace with Italy tottering through the European debt crisis, announced Saturday he was making a comeback and running for a fourth term as premier.

Berlusconi, 76, reluctantly stepped down last year after pressure from international financial markets. He was later convicted of tax fraud and is on trial in Milan for alleged sexual misconduct and abuse of power when he was premier.

An unelected government of technocrats, led by widely respected economist Mario Monti, was appointed to replace him. Opinion polls have seen the popularity of Berlusconi's Freedom People Party plunge to far below that of Italy's other large political force, the center-left Democratic Party.

But Berlusconi professed confidence he can achieve victory.

"I'm running to win," Berlusconi told reporters outside the training facilities of his soccer team AC Milan.

One of Monti's biggest backers in Parliament, centrist leader Pier Ferdinando Casini, bemoaned Berlusconi's bid to return to office.

"It has been a year that Italians are seriously sacrificing to try to avoid Greece's abyss, and, today, there's the reemergence of Berlusconi, who wants to bring us back five years," Casini said on state TV.

Since Monti took office, the retirement age for Italy's generous pensions has been raised, sales taxes have been hiked and a property tax on primary residences ? abolished by Berlusconi to fulfill one of his own campaign promises ? has been reinstated.

But while opinion polls of prospective voters find slumping support for Berlusconi's party, to lower than 15 percent, the media mogul might be betting on public impatience with those sacrifices.

No date has been set for elections, linked to the end of Parliament's term in late April. But Berlusconi's decision earlier in the week to withdraw the support of his party ? Parliament's largest ? for Monti's anti-crisis government increased the likelihood that Italy's president would dissolve the legislature weeks early and elections ahead of schedule.

"It seems to me that March 10 has been indicated" as a possible date for early elections, "and that seems a date that's fine with me," Berlusconi said.

Monti headed back from a conference in France for a meeting Saturday evening at the presidential palace to take the pulse of political tensions. President Giorgio Napolitano has made clear he wants Parliament to at least pass a vital budget law later this month and avoid a "precipitous" demise amid mounting political uncertainty.

When pressure from international financial markets forced Berlusconi to reluctantly step down in November 2011 at the height of sovereign debt worries, many pundits dismissed any prospects for a comeback bid for the combative businessman-turned-politician, who has led Italy's conservatives for nearly 20 years.

Since Berlusconi resigned 18 months short of the end of his third stint in the premiership, he has been convicted of tax fraud. He is appealing, and in Italy, convictions don't become definitive until after two levels of appeals are exhausted.

He is also on trial in Milan for allegedly having sex with an underage prostitute and using his office when premier to try to cover it up, charges he has denied. The young woman has also denied having sex with the then-premier. Berlusconi, whose convictions in previous trials on charges linked to his media empire's dealings have either been overturned or thrown out when statute of limitations expired, claims he is the victim of prosecutors he contends sympathize with the left.

With financial markets rattled over the prospect that Monti might see his tenure in the premiership end before May if early elections are called, the premier insisted that the political crisis was "manageable." Monti contended his government, with its austerity agenda of spending cuts, higher taxes and pension reform, spared Italy ? and with it, other nations in the eurozone ? from succumbing to financial disaster.

Standard & Poor's rating agency on Friday indicated it could lower Italy's rating if the recession endures well into 2013, and it cited "uncertainty" the next Italian government can stay the tough course of austerity Monti's nonpartisan government managed to move through Parliament, thanks to the wide support.

Berlusconi declared "the campaign is already on" and insisted he's running "out of a sense of responsibility" toward recession-plagued Italy. For months, he had been coy about whether he would run again. But on Saturday he claimed that a search for a new leader, like the one he was when he burst into politics in the early 1990s, failed, and so "out of desperation" for lack of alternative, he was jumping into the race.

Italian media have reported that Berlusconi was particularly irked by Monti's Cabinet approval, earlier in the week, of a measure that would ban from running for office anyone sentenced to more than two years in prison after convictions are definitely upheld in cases of terrorism, organized crime and offenses in public office, including corruption.

Berlusconi's tax fraud conviction in October carries a four-year sentence, but the case could be dismissed if the statute of limitations runs out before all appeals are exhausted.

Critics have contended that Berlusconi expended much of his efforts as premier to push through legislation tailor-made to help him in his legal woes, and any new term in the premier's office could offer a similar opportunity.

Since his last election bid, in 2008, Berlusconi has lost the key support of its biggest coalition partner, the Northern League, which refused to support Monti's government. But the League, whose founder, Umberto Bossi, has been tarnished by scandal, hasn't ruled out forging a new election alliance with Berlusconi.

Typhoon heads back to Philippines after nearly 600 die

Bullit Marquez / AP

Eddie Jotojot on Saturday checks the coffin of his son, who was killed at the height of Tuesday's Typhoon Bopha in New Bataan.

By NBC News wire services

NEW BATAAN, Philippines -- A typhoon that had left the Philippines after killing nearly 600 people and leaving hundreds missing in the south has made a U-turn and is now threatening the country's northwest, officials said Saturday.

The weather bureau issued storm warnings over parts of the main northern island of Luzon after Typhoon Bopha veered northeast. There was a strong possibility the storm would make a second landfall Sunday, but it might also make a loop and remain in the South China Sea, forecasters said. In either case, it was moving close to shore with much-reduced winds near its center of 35 mph. Still, disaster officials warned of heavy rains and winds and possible landslides in the mountainous region.

Another calamity in the north would stretch recovery efforts thin. Most government resources, including army and police, are currently focused on the south, where Bopha hit Tuesday before moving west into the South China Sea.

With many survivors still in shock, soldiers, police and outside volunteers formed most of the teams searching for bodies or signs of life under tons of fallen trees and boulders swept down from steep hills surrounding the worst-hit town of New Bataan, municipal spokesman Marlon Esperanza said.

"We are having a hard time finding guides," he told The Associated Press. "Entire families were killed and the survivors ... appear dazed. They can't move."

?

He said the rocks, mud, tree trunks and other rubble that litter the town have destroyed landmarks, making it doubly difficult to search places where houses once stood.

On Friday, bodies found jammed under fallen trees that could not be retrieved were marked with makeshift flags made of torn cloth so they could be easily spotted by properly equipped teams.

Authorities decided to bury unidentified bodies in a common grave after forensic officials process them for future identification by relatives, Esperanza said.

The town's damaged public market has been converted into a temporary funeral parlor. A few residents milled around two dozen white wooden coffins, some containing unidentified remains.

One resident, Jing Maniquiz, 37, said she rushed home from Manila for the wake of two of her sisters, but could not bring herself to visit the place where her home once stood in Andap village. Her parents, a brother and nephew are missing.

"I don't want to see it," she said tearfully. "I can't accept that in just an instant I lost my mother, my father, my brother."

She said that at the height of the typhoon, her mother was able to send her a text message saying trees were falling on their house and its roof had been blown away.

Maniquiz said her family sought refuge at a nearby health center, but that was destroyed and they and dozens of others were swept away by the raging waters.

"We are not hopeful that they are still alive. We just want to find their bodies so that we will have closure," she said.

Mary Joy Adlawan, a 14-year-old high school student from the same village, was waiting for authorities to bury her 7-year-old niece.

Her parents, an elder sister, five nieces and a nephew are missing.

"I don't know what to do," she said as she fixed some flowers on the coffin.

Esperanza said heavy equipment, search dogs and chain saws were brought by volunteers from as far away as the capital, Manila, about 950 kilometers (590 miles) to the north.

Nearly 400,000 people, mostly from Compostela Valley and nearby Davao Oriental provinces, have lost their homes and are crowded inside evacuation centers or staying with relatives.

The typhoon plowed through the main southern island of Mindanao, crossed the central Philippines and lingered over the South China Sea for the past two days. It made a U-turn Saturday and is now threatening the northwestern Ilocos region.

President Benigno Aquino III, after visiting the disaster zone, declared a state of national calamity late Friday to speed up rescue and rehabilitation, control prices of basic commodities in typhoon-affected areas and allow the quick release of emergency funds.

In Bangkok, Thailand, U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said the Philippines had appealed for international aid. She said many countries have already provided assistance, but did not specify the amounts.

Officials say 276 people were killed in Compostela Valley, including 155 in New Bataan, and 277 in Davao Oriental. About 40 people died elsewhere and nearly 600 are still missing, 411 from New Bataan alone.

Farmer Cresencia Blanco, 57, told Reuters that she and her neighbors around Osmena town had been neglected in the relief effort.

"They are focused on New Bataan," she said. "Since the typhoon struck, we only got a total of four kilos of rice, that's all."

Nearby, Blanco's son, Monching, held up a placard that read: "We're hungry. We don't have relief goods. Have mercy on us."?

As people from Osmena gathered along a highway, a convoy of trucks carrying food supplies rumbled past, with people scrambling madly for packs of noodles thrown from the trucks.

Davao Oriental Gov. Corazon Malanyaon told the AP that clean water and shelter were the biggest problem in three towns facing the Pacific Ocean. She said she imposed a curfew there and ordered police to guard stores and shops to stop looting.

The Philippines is also counting economic losses. Banana growers reported that 14,000 hectares (34,600 acres) of export banana plantations, equal to 18 percent of the total in Mindanao, were destroyed. The Philippines is the world's third-largest banana producer and exporter, supplying international brands such as Dole, Chiquita and Del Monte.

Stephen Antig, executive director of the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association, said losses were estimated at 12 billion pesos ($300 million), including 8 billion pesos ($200 million) in damaged fruits that had been ready for harvest, and the rest for the cost of rehabilitating farms, which will take about a year.

In some parts of Mindanao, people took to gold panning as floodwaters swept a mining area in Mawab town. "Now, I can repair the roofs of my house," Alexander Chavez told Reuters as entire families descended on a river to gather gold tailings.?

At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI expressed closeness to the people hit by the typhoon. "I pray for the victims, for their families and for the many homeless," the pontiff said Saturday, addressing pilgrims and tourists from his studio window overlooking St. Peter's Square.

Apple says new 27-inch iMac orders will ship in January

Screen Shot 2012-12-07 at 10.18.35 AM

Earlier this month, Apple started pushing back the estimated shipping times for its new line of 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs. Apple CEO Tim Cook previously warned prior to the launch of the new lineup that the company expected significant delays leading into the holidays. While the 21.5-inch iMacs are still listed at ?7-10 days? on at least Apple?s United States and Canada online stores, the 27-inch model is now listed as shipping in ?January?. Apple previously displayed ?3-4 weeks?. ?While we are obviously now only three weeks out until January, the change could mean further delays for the new iMacs and possibly shipments late into January as opposed to at the start of the month.

The Truth About Guys and Online Dating: Episode 253 | Boundless ...

Our guest on this week's culture segment is Chad Eastham. I first heard Chad speak on The Revolve Tour when I was on the staff of a magazine for Christian teen girls. I remember him talking about girls and guys and waffles and spaghetti (two of my favorite foods). So when I saw he has a new book releasing in January, I wondered what he might have to say to Boundless' young adult audience ? after all, he's a 30-something single guy himself. ?

What stood out to me in Lisa's interview with Chad was that, yes, relationships are complicated, but sometimes we're the ones making them too complicated. In the interview, Chad notes, "People don?t even know how to talk to each other." That's crazy, yet so true. If two people can't communicate without fear or insecurity, how do they expect to ever have a meaningful relationship?

Another point that stood out to me is when Chad said right now he's focused on learning to love people better and "the questions of romance take care of themselves when I'm doing that." That sounds like a great resolution to keep in mind for the New Year: Love because Christ first loved us (1 John 4:19).

What things did you find helpful in this week's episode?

Dating Online -- 00:00

"Why would anyone join an online dating service?" If you haven't tried it, you've probably asked this question. So this week we have two young women, Adrianne and Ashley, join Lisa in the studio to explain what motivated them to sign up. They also tell us about their positive and negative experiences of filling out a profile, viewing matches and going on dates. ?

Chad Eastham -- 26:45

Chad writes books that tell the truth about guys, dating, love, just being friends, breaking up, making up and moving on. And in this interview, Chad shares his observations and experiences of today's guy-girl relationships. Listen in to discover why he believes young adults need to better use their "God-given brain" when it comes to relationships.

Age Matters -- 49:55

While?browsing?through an online dating site, this 23 year old says all the guys seemed to be significantly older than her. How can she find matches more in her age range? Sam Moorcroft, co-founder and president of ChristanCafe.com, shares some ideas.

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Friday after the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell last week, offsetting a somber economic forecast by the European Central Bank for a bleak year ahead in the region.

The U.S. Labor Department said Thursday that applications dropped 25,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 370,000, a level consistent with modest hiring. The number of people continuing to receive unemployment aid also fell.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.1 percent to 9,554.09. South Korea's Kospi added 0.4 percent to 1,958.13. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 1 percent to 4,552.40. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.2 percent to 22,299.21.

On Thursday, the European Central Bank said that the economies of 17 countries that use the euro will contract next year. The central bank stopped short of offering new measures to boost growth and left its key interest rate unchanged at a record low.

The combined economy of the euro countries is in a recession after a massive debt crisis followed by government spending cuts and tax hikes that have hurt growth.

"Although the ECB left policy rates unchanged the post ECB meeting press conference effectively opened the door to a rate cut in Q1 next year following sharp downward revisions to growth projections and well below target inflation projected over the medium term," said analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was up 16 cents to $86.42 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.62, or 1.8 percent, to finish at $86.26 per barrel in New York on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2969 from $1.2963 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 82.47 yen from 82.36 yen.
